Snarky and sarcastic, Eugene sees himself as the loveable rogue; handsome, cunning, chock full o’ charm, and good at whatever he puts his mind to (especially crime). But that’s all his incredibly large ego talking. In actuality, he’s not nearly as cunning or competent in areas outside thievery as he thinks he is.

His hubris lies in how self-absorbed and selfish he can be. He tends to put his own desires first, without thinking of the people around him, and he has a Narcissus-level love for himself. You better believe he will absolutely admire himself in the mirror any chance he gets. His egocentric way of thinking has definitely gotten him into trouble many, many times. When he, Rapunzel, and the rest of their party arrive at a spooky magic house, he almost immediately gets dragged into a mirror and replaced by a doppelganger. He’s the first one of the group to get snatched, all because he couldn’t resist checking himself out.

His ego gets in the way in a number of other ways, too. Whenever someone points out his flaws or shortcomings, he will go to absurd lengths to prove them wrong. At the start of the series, Cassandra stops Rapunzel from letting Eugene in on a secret, because Eugene can't keep a secret to save his damn life. Instead of backing off, though, Eugene goes around to all of his acquaintances to try and get someone to share their secrets with him. He puts so much effort into something relatively trivial in the grand scheme of things, and it’s a theme that continues throughout the series. If someone says he’s only good at crime, he’ll take on a dozen different jobs even though he fails at each of them. If someone implies he’s weird for not believing in fortune-tellers, he’ll go out of his way to prove they’re a scam and show he’s right.

Needless to say, Eugene’s confidence is off the charts. He very rarely doubts himself or his abilities. He’s very street smart, and is very competent in the things he knows how to do. He does lack common sense, however, and doesn’t always think things through. This is partly because he thinks of himself first (proposing in a completely inappropriate time and place), but he also just lacks common sense in general. Mix that with his general dislike of authority and rules, and you get someone who shirks his responsibilities and twists rules so they’re in his favor.

As mentioned, Eugene sees himself as very charming and suave--just look at his attempts at using the smoulder. He’ll try to talk his way out of bad situations, even if he’s at a disadvantage. When the Stabbington Brothers break out of jail and come after him, Eugene’s first instinct is to try and talk them down. He's very good at talking. He's just not so great at the convincing part, so it's not often that he's able to talk himself out of anything. He does know how to use his naturally chatty nature to his advantage, though, as a means to distract. In the same situation with the Stabbington Brothers, while his attempt to talk them down fails, he continues to talk at them to buy time for Cassandra to trap them.

Despite his selfishness, Eugene is willing to sacrifice his own happiness for the people he cares about. He agrees to a marriage he doesn’t want in order to save his best friend, Lance, and has jumped in the way of danger for Rapunzel more than once. Even if his priorities aren’t in the right place to start, as soon as he realizes that one of his friends is in trouble, he focuses on the issue at hand. Of course, depending on who needs help, he’ll absolutely gripe about the situation the whole time. But the important thing is that he does still help. Especially if it’s important to Rapunzel.

Speaking of Rapunzel, she’s by far the most important relationship to him, and someone who has a profound impact on who he is and how he behaves. She makes him want to be a better person. He loves her so much, he would follow her to the ends of the earth and back. He’s always there to comfort her when something goes wrong, or to dispense surprisingly good advice when she needs it. No matter his shortcomings, he does whatever he can to help the woman he loves.

Eugene is always ready with a one-liner, can be rude and snarky, has an ego the size of a small planet, and doesn’t always have his priorities straight. But his heart is in the right place, and despite his past as a thief, he strives to move past it and become a better person.

At his current canonpoint, Eugene lacks the character growth that meeting and falling in love with Rapunzel has given him. So while deep, deep down he’s not a bad guy, he’s more likely than not to save his own skin over helping anyone else. Especially if the other person isn’t someone close to him.

Eugene is always ready with a one-liner, can be rude and snarky, has an ego the size of a small planet, and doesn’t always have his priorities straight. But he has the capacity to change for the better. He just needs a push in the right direction.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping: Eugene is pretty dexterous as a thief, and can put up a good fight, but he’s otherwise a normal dude.

Eugene wasn’t sure what possessed him to backstab the Stabbington brothers, yet here he was, leaving them trapped with guards hot on their trail. Sure, Eugene was a thief. He was a swashbuckling rogue, traveling the...well. Not the high seas, but traveling! He was definitely traveling. But that was besides the point. The point was that even though he was a criminal, he wasn’t in the habit of betraying the people he was working with. If it were Lance back there, Eugene would have pulled him up. Probably.

Maybe his spur-of-the moment decision to ditch two of the meanest, beefiest galutes in Corona was a bad idea. No matter how you looked at it, they were just the worst. The only reason Eugene worked with them in the first place, was because there was the promise of untold riches. Once he had the crown in his hands, though, he didn't want to let it go. It made him feel...warm, in a weird way. It made the thought of Stabby One and Stabby Two pawning it off uncomfortable. He didn’t know why. Maybe it was homesickness.

Hah. Homesickness. Yeah right.

Ah well it didn’t matter. Those two would be caught and locked up for a good long while, so as far as Eugene was concerned, the consequences for his actions wouldn’t come back to bite him any time soon. And by the time they did, well, he and the crown would be long gone.

Or so he thought. Turns out the universe did not plan to give him a clean getaway. So after being chased and then almost mauled by a horse, Eugene was free falling off the side of a cliff. But before he could give the world a snarky farewell, an iridescent black rock shot towards him from cliffside.

Alright then. He wasn’t going to experience death by falling, it was going to be death by ‘being impaled on his own dumb rocks.’ instead. This was just fantastic.

But the rock stopped. It was far enough away that he wasn’t at risk of impalement, but still close enough that he could grab on and pull himself up. “This is gonna be the first and last time I say this, but boy am I glad I can use these things.”

With a shaky laugh, Eugene focused on controlling the black rock and slowly descended, chunks of dirt and stone crumbling as it cut through the cliffside. It had been a while since he willingly did anything with the rocks, but it was like riding a bicycle; Once you got the hang of it, you never really forgot. As soon as his feet touched the ground and the black rock flattened itself against the rockface, Eugene felt like the very center of himself was being gently pulled towards...something. And whatever that something was, it felt important.

He took a couple steps forward in a daze, but the moment was broken by the sound of shouting from above and he snapped back to his senses. What was he doing? It was only a matter of time before they figured out where he went. He needed to move, fast.

In his rush to escape and find a place to lay low for a while, Eugene fell through a hidden passage and into...a clearing with a tower. He didn’t have time to wonder why a tower would be out in the middle of nowhere before that pull returned, stronger than it had been before. It felt like power was humming beneath his skin, urging him on.

“Now, I wonder what’s up there?”

He circled the base of the tower once, but there weren’t any stairs or doors or...anything. The only opening was the window at the top. Honestly, it seemed like a design flaw, but something told him it was an intentional one. Which was creepy all on it’s own, but for some reason it reminded him of the dark, lonely room he spent a good chunk of his early childhood in. It made him uneasy, but...he had to go up there. Not just because of the strange feeling drawing him closer, but because it was probably the best place to lay low while he waited for the guards to give up and look elsewhere.

The problem: Just how was he supposed to get up there?

He could just scale the wall, but it wasn't an appealing thought after running through the forest and almost dying. An idea struck him. It wasn’t a good one, but it was the fastest, least exhausting option. Eugene was usually against using the black rocks, and for a variety of reasons. But he had already used them once today. What was the harm in using his power just one more time?

Eugene backed up to give himself some room, let out a breath, and then ran full force towards the wall. A black rock sprung from the ground beneath his foot with enough force to send him flying. It was more force than he had intended, but he was still able to grab onto the windowsill. He just had the added bonus of hitting the side of the tower extra hard.

With a soft ‘Oof,’ he pulled himself up and into the room.

“That is the last time I try that move.”
